Elevator Fire Service Keys: Regional Use and Standardization
Elevator Fire Service
Keys: Regional Use and Standardization
Elevator fire service keys are critical tools that allow firefighters to take control of elevators during emergencies. These keys enable the activation of “Firefighter Emergency Operation” (FEO), ensuring elevators operate in a way that supports emergency response and enhances safety during a fire.
FEO involves two key phases:
- Phase I: A
key-operated switch in the hallway near the elevator recalls all cars to
the main floor and takes them out of service for public use. This ensures
elevators are available exclusively for emergency personnel.
- Phase
II:
Once inside the elevator, firefighters use the same key to activate a
second switch that gives them manual control over the elevator car. One
key feature of this mode is the ability to slowly open the elevator doors
using the open/close buttons (the ones that you press to either try to
close the door faster or keep it open), allowing firefighters to check for
hazards—such as a fire directly outside—before fully opening the door. The
switch can also be placed in “Hold” mode to keep the car stationed at the
floor for return trips, especially when assisting occupants.
Originally, building owners
were required to provide the fire department with a copy of their elevator
keys. But as more elevator systems from different manufacturers were installed,
firefighters had to carry a wide variety of keys—slowing response times in
emergencies.
To address this, many local
jurisdictions began mandating specific fire service keys. Unfortunately,
different regions selected different key codes and manufacturers, leading to a
patchwork of incompatible systems. To resolve this, the elevator industry eventually
recommended that all future jurisdictions standardize on the FEOK1 key.
Despite this effort, many
areas continue to use their legacy key codes. A summary of the most common
regional fire service keys and the areas in which they are used is provided
below.
NATIONAL STANDARD
- FEOK1
(Fire Emergency Operations Key 1) – there is no FEOK2.
- This
should be used when any jurisdiction wants to implement a new standard key
code.
